Amble Market Town Food Hub

Background
Amble Development Trust (ADT) is exploring a range of social enterprise initiatives within the food sector, with the objective to develop sustainable income streams while creating employment and training opportunities within the local community.

Objectives
Pulse were commissioned to develop feasibility studies to assess income generating potential of a restaurant and a market garden, as well as to develop a business plan to secure funding.

Actions
Working with ADT and partner agencies, the process included:
· Development of a Feasibility Study for a high quality seafood restaurant, establishing vision and objectives, opportunities for training and links with local colleges, and financial implications of development and operation.
· Development of a Feasibility Study for development of a market garden, including consideration of location, produce to offer, staffing and management implications, and likely income and expenditure profiles.
· Development of a Business Plan to support a Leader+ application.

Key Achievements
Comprehensive progression of the food hub concept, particularly so in relation to providing a greater level of understanding about the implications of introducing a high quality restaurant and a market garden, and the impact that this would have.

Miriam Place Neighbourhood Nursery

Background
The Miriam Place neighbourhood Nursery is operated by Sure Start Birkenhead North within the St James Centre. Sure Start Birkenhead North is an established second wave Sure Start Programme based in the Bidston and St James ward in North Birkenhead.


Objectives
Pulse were commissioned to develop a business plan for the Miriam Place Neighbourhood Nursery that is located within the St James Centre.

Actions
· Investigated need and competition in the area
· Detailed case studies of other children’s centres that have developed similar operational models
· Developed strategic objectives for the operation of the Nursery
· Undertook consultation with stakeholders and potential customers
· Developed a legal and staffing structure for the operation of the Nursery
· Three-year detailed cashflow projection produced

Key Achievements
· Production of a Business Plan for the Miriam Place Neighbourhood Nursery
· Developed a logo and corporate brand for the Nursery (pictured left)

Lauries Events

Background
The Lauries Project was established in 2002 to develop a community facility for Birkenhead and a wider regeneration agenda for the benefit of the local community. Lauries Events Ltd was developed as a trading arm to the Lauries Ltd that owns the Lauries Centre, and is responsible for managing three elements of the Centre, the social area, the event space, and the smaller function room.

Objectives
Pulse was appointed to develop a business plan for a social area and event space that forms part of the new Lauries Centre in Birkenhead.
Actions
· Developed strategic objectives for the operation of the enterprise
· Undertook detailed market research including competitor analysis, market demand and identification of potential customers
· Detailed a proposed pricing structure for the various services and facilities
· Developed a legal and management structure for the enterprise
· Developed an delivery plan including operational issues and dates for delivery of actions

Key Achievements
· Production of a detailed Business Plan for the social enterprise
· Successful launch and social enterprise generating surplus income, which is supporting the development of the parent charity, Lauries Limited

Housing Initiatives

Background
Housing Initiatives is a charity based in Sefton, Merseyside. The organisation was established with the aim of providing tenancies to people with learning disabilities, to enable them to live independently in the community, in their own homes and with regular support.

Objectives
Pulse was first commissioned to assist with a funding application to secure a Merseyside Social Enterprise Initiative Sustainability Grant, and secondly, to undertake a strategic business plan for the organisation to develop a strategy to guide the future development and contribute towards the long-term sustainability of Housing Initiatives Ltd.

Actions
· Facilitated a number of strategic planning sessions with Trustees and staff
· Helped to identify income generating opportunities including an expansion in property development and creation of a trading arm Housing Commitments
· Assisted in the development of a number of new project ideas to provide added value to the tenants
· Developed a business strategy for the organisation, including medium and longer term objectives, staffing and legal considerations
· Developed an implementation plan including staffing and legal considerations
· Developed cashflow projections for three years of operation

Key Achievements
· Production of a detailed Strategic Business Plan setting out the future direction for the organisation and key growth targets
